Density Experiment With Orange

density experiments for elementary students

Density is a well known term in science. This term is first read during our elementary grades. As an student it is always better to learn via science experiments. Today we learn density experiment with orange. We can do this experiment and better learn about science terms such as density, sink, float, etc. This density experiments for elementary students with orange can be good science fair ideas also.

Orange density experiment is best for elementary students. Students who are from grade 3 to 8. There are lots of other density experiments for elementary students such as liquid density experiment , floating egg experiment.

What is Density Experiment With Orange ?

It is basically an experiment about density. It shows that denser object sinks and less denser object floats in water.

Orange density experiment is a cool school science experiments that helps us to answers many questions like :

  • How to do density experiment ?
  • What is density ?
  • Why do peeled orange sink ?
  • Best school science experiments for density.

Materials Required To Orange Density Experiment :

There are a lot of items need for this school science experiment. Below are some of the materials which are most essential :

  • Two oranges.
  • Two clear water glass.
  • Pure clean water.

Density Experiment With Orange Process :

After all materials are collected now its time to make this science experiment.

  • First of all put a clean water in a clear glass.
  • Put a unpeeled orange on this water. We can see that this orange floats on water.  Note this record.
  • Now peel another orange and put on a glass that contains water as in previous.
  • As we drop this orange it sinks in water.

Orange Density Experiment Video :

For better demo of preparation of this project, we have embedded our working process below in video format.

Here is full process of making this science project in video form. This is our YouTube channel DIY Projects. We also have crated many other school science projects in our channel. We also provide many science fair ideas for school students.

Density Experiment With Orange Explanation :

We can get a lots of information from this science experiment.

Density :

Density can be defined as mass per unit volume. Symbol of density is rho (ρ). Density is the factor that determines weather object floats or sinks in water.

Why do unpeeled orange floats on water ?

As we put unpeeled orange in water it floats on water. This is so because its density is less then that of water. We know that there are a lot of air space inside orange that makes orange boat like shape. As a result its upthrust is exerted. Which in result makes orange float on water.

Why do peeled orange sinks in water ?

When we orange an put it inside water then it sinks. Here water density is less then that of orange. As a result orange sinks in water.

Science fair projects for elementary school students :

This orange density experiment is one of the best science project for elementary school. We can also make some other science projects like Balloon Rocket Experiment, How to make boatAir Pressure Experiment, Walking Water Experiment, Seed Germination Experiment, Earth layer science project, etc.

Advantages of Density Experiment With Orange :

There are lots of advantages of this school science project. We have mention some of the merits :

  • This project helps us to learn about different science terms as upthrust, density, sink, float, etc
  • This elementary science experiment brings interest in study about science .
  • It can be great science fair ideas for elementary grade.

Safety tips while making orange density experiment :

Our first priority before doing any science project must always be safety. We always suggest you to perform any science project protecting yourself.

  • Always ware a safety glass that protects your eyes.
  • We suggest to do this science project with your parents, teachers or any elders.

There are a lot of science projects from which we can learn about density.

Liquid Density Experiment  is a cool science project. Here we take liquids that has different density value. A layer of liquids can be achieved. This school science project is good for middle school students too.

Egg density experiment is also another science project for learning density. Here we take three eggs and put in water that has different density value. For changing density of liquid we put different amount of salt in three different glasses. As we put egg we can get three different results.

In one glass egg is floating. In next glass egg is partially sinking and in last glass egg completely sinks.

Q&A on density :

1. Why is density important ?

Density is a important term. It can be defined as mass per unit volume. It determines weather an object sinks or floats .

2. How does temperature affect density?

Molecules of hot water are loosely packed with compression to cold liquid. This cause hot water less denser and cold water more denser.

As we supply heat to a container with water. Then there forms water current. Hot water rises up and cold water takes it place until all water boils.

3. At what temperature is water most denser?

At 4 degree celsius water density is highest. Below and above this temperature water density is lower then at 4 degree celsius.

4. Is oil more dense than water ?

Oil density is less then that of water. So it floats over water.

When we pour oil over water then we can see a layer of oil over water.
